So I noticed that today is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, which I hope has been pointed out by many people in the media - I only knew because I read up on it, but it's the sort of thing which could pad out a news broadcast or newspaper article. And most of us are aware that Cinco de Mayo is a bigger deal in the US than in most parts of Mexico.

But the US has a neighbor to the north, too; why don't we have a Canadian holiday? This may bear pondering.

How about August 24? The 200th anniversary is coming up, too.

The burning of Washington is certainly memorable, but we probably wouldn't want to encourage anyone to repeat the event. Setting fire to things is a good part of a celebration, though!

Now, coming up this August 24th is the 200th anniversary of the end of the Seige of Cadiz, which is appropriately obscure but didn't involve any Canadians.

Canada must have had dramatic events in its history, possibly involving victories over some faction currently out of fashion. Offhand, I can't recall any surprise victories of Canadians over French forces. But really, all we need is a good excuse to wave maple leaf flags and drink lots of Canadian beer, eh?

Canada Day is July 1; you could join in and start your July 4 celebrations a bit early.

We've had a lot of dramatic events in our history, but we usually view them as horrible mistakes never to be repeated again, rather than as things to celebrate. The Canadian War Museum does an excellent job of documenting why our military victories were also tragic personal and national losses.
