Just a few minutes ago I went into the kitchen and discovered that my back window gave me a view of a raccoon...no, TWO raccoons! This is a bit of a surprise when you're only a meter away from them. It seems a mother raccoon and her child have set up base camp under my garden shed, as after getting a good grip on the youngster's scruff she dragged the little fellow underneath it and has not emerged. She could stay down there all summer if she had water and an internet connection.
I may be the last mammal nearby to know of this; two of the three usual Visitor Cats were loitering in the yard, with rather thin excuses. What they thought they'd do I can't tell; Mama Coon is bigger than either of them, and they're clearly optimized for the lifestyle of sitting on couches and hunting canned food (as am I). A third cat wandered by to look curiously at my shed, but one of the regulars gave her the cold shoulder.
This probably won't be the end of the matter.
PS: Since I had multiple cats hanging around and a laser pointer, I entertained myself. The lesson is learned that even the most agile Red Dot chasing cat can be fooled if the Red Dot is sneaky enough to hide behind her butt, where there is also a flicking tail. This does not fool the other cat. The human is greatly amused.
