My little netbook, upon which I did the whole OryCon daily zine last weekend, performed magnificently the whole weekend without the tiniest burp. (It didn't recognize every printer we tried to use, but that's another thing.) After the con, it wouldn't boot up at all. Nothing.

Damn.

So I got out a Knoppix DVD and have moved all my data off of it (in thumb-drive sized chunks, which has taken a while); so far so good. Now...I can't find the Windows XP disk. Not that I was looking forward to the re-install, but it's kind of important to have that bit. Grumble, grumble...

Email me. I've got XP Pro & XP Home CDs, both OEM and retail. One of them should work for the install.

I can loan you one or make other arrangements.

My sympathies. You see why Lisa and I are monomaniacs on cloned drives? Right now, I have three clones of my main machine's hard drive, in rotation. But even then, I've had to rebuild from an early clone (not part of the rotation) about once every year or two.

Indeed!

Not mentioned above is that I've got a 4Gb memory card in the laptop, allowing me to swap my commonly used files over to another machine in seconds (I'd planned for just this emergency!). This doesn't give me another physical machine, though, so my portability is a little impaired right now. *grin*

Happy now

Update: it's up and running now; once I found the correct DVD (in the box for a portable hard drive, for some reason), the reinstall went flawlessly as soon as I figured out that the screen saver coming on during installation made the machine reboot. (Seriously, WTF?) Now I've got a clean copy of Windows and much of my software is already back in. Vital data is already back and I'm sure I'll start accumulating cruft soon.
