Saturday I went down to Rickreall for the Swaptoberfest event. (There is no other reason to go to Rickreall.) It’s a rare thing when I pull into a parking lot and am hit with the feeling that my car doesn’t have enough antennas.

Oh, my... I've ridden in the Big Orange Van so I am all but immune to seeing rolling antenna farms. That is a lot of radios, though.

I’d been hoping for more toys relevant to my needs or whims than I actually found. Although if I’d been in the market for vacuum tube driven antiques I’ve have been beside myself.

I did find these and had just about talked myself into thinking that my pantry needed a two meter radio to monitor 146.520MHz (it doesn’t) but someone else decided to take both of them; apparently she now has three of the same model so it was a score for her.Kenwood radios @ Swaptoberfest 2019

I spent $20 on raffle tickets and got two stories for it.

The tickets were $1 each but with a bonus for volume: one ticket for $1, six for $5, 13 for $10, or 25 for $20. Those who do the math will discover the most efficient buying plan. (My father had a story about this which I’ve related before.) When I brought this up at the end of the day I was told that I was the only one to buy $10 worth of tickets and then come back later with another $10. Did nobody else do the math?

Anyhow, at the end of the day they raffled off various radios. I’d already calculated that my odds were poor (in the vicinity of 1%) so I didn’t expect to get anything but entertainment; I wasn’t surprised or disappointed to hear other people’s call signs announced as winners. Then at the end they drew for the grand prize and called out “[letter letter number]” of my call sign, and a dramatic pause, and at this point they had my attention, and then “[letter letter letter]” for someone else. Oof! I did get to congratulate the winner a few minutes later, but he was understandably distracted.
