Pit Stop

by Scott Sanford
part 2

A few minutes later, with a brief pause to get everyone ready to go out in public, they were outside, looking at the princess’s transport, right where they’d expected it in the parking lot.

Some of it had begun as a spinning wheel, with the rim bejeweled with strange crystals. This was set on a small wooden platform with a railing around the edges, and esoteric runes were painted all over everything. As they arrived it was being fussed over by a raccoon wearing a tool belt.

It was also in the middle of the driveway, blocking traffic.

“Okay, so it’s not the Lotus Prime,” Jenny said. “I’ve seen worse. This can’t be too hard to fix, right?”

The tool laden raccoon chittered at her, possibly disagreeing. The one in the vest chirped back, and was answered, an exchange more enlightening if one spoke Raccoon.

“At least it’s somewhere safe,” Kim remarked, just as an old Beetle rolled in and braked to a stop, blocked by the tableau in the driveway.

Jenny waved to the driver apologetically.

The driver opened the door and asked, “Is this going to be here long?”

“No, no, just a second. Hold on, David,” Kim said. “Jenny, other Jenny, grab an end and let’s get this into an empty parking space.”

Jenny was faster; she and Kim took hold of the peculiar machine and lugged it into a nearby parking space, while Genevieve reassured the raccoons and directed them out of the way.

The Beetle rolled past them and parked. The driver emerged in a few moments and greeted them.

“Hello, Kim,” he said. “Hi, Jenny; hi… other Jenny…?”

“Hello, David,” Kim said. “We’ve got company. Genevieve, David, vice versa.”

“Good morning, sir; I am Princess Genevieve of everywhere.” She curtsied graciously. “These are my companions, the lady in waiting Willow and her brother Wu, a clever inventor.”

The raccoons chittered at him in polite greeting.

“David Lowe. Nice to meet you.” He took in the ladies and the bizarre contraption and the bipedal raccoons with hand tools. “We’re having another Jenny moment, are we?”

“Until now it was a slow morning, really,” Kim told him.

“Right up until the raccoons arrived, eh? Is that a time machine?”

“No!”, Jenny said. “Or yes. Maybe. It’s complicated.”

“It’s also broken,” Kim explained.

“Good thing it happened here, then. Kim, I was at the butcher’s and Morrie gave me a package for you. He said he hadn’t seen you for a while, so...”

“Oh, thank you! That saves me a trip.”

“Come on, let me get you your, you know.” Kim and David went to his car, where he extracted a paper wrapped package, apparently heavy for its size, which he gave to her. “You’ll probably want to get this into the fridge before it goes bad.”

“Yes I will. Can I help you carry your groceries? Jenny, I’ll be back in a minute!”

“It’s okay,” Jenny told her, “We’ll try not to disturb any more regular people.”

“Regular people, we are,” David remarked.

“Absolutely,” Kim agreed dryly. “Who could be more regular and normal than the two of us?”

“Nobody in this building.” He chuckled.

The two of them collected various bags and went inside.

This left Jenny to consider the object before her. It was undeniably a thing. The platform would hold the operator with room for a few raccoons, or another human if they were skinny. The spinning wheel would give Genevieve a place to sit; when she worked the treadle it would spin the wheel, which was connected to other random moving bits, and apparently stuff would happen.

“I’m not sure I know how to fix this,” Jenny said.

“Nor I. ‘Twas my friends who built it.”

Willow chattered at her earnestly while Wu made various gestures at parts of the contraption.

“I’m sorry, I don’t speak Raccoon. Wait... do I speak Raccoon?”

“They say they need an artificer, and tools they do not have.”

“Oh! Now that I can help with. Will you and your friends be okay here for a few minutes?”

The princess agreed they would.

“I’ll be right back!” Jenny went back into the apartment building herself and in moments was knocking on another apartment door.

“Eric? It’s me, Jenny.”

She heard movement and in a moment the door opened.

“What’s up?”, asked the gangly boy within.

“A lot. You’re going to want to see this. Also, um, I need you to fix something.”

“You want my help now? After everything with the trilobites?”

“You’re going to want to see what we’ve got in the parking lot, Eric. No, wait, let me say this right…” Jenny put her hands on her hips and looked him directly in the eye.

“I’m not just here to show you something shiny. I’m not here for some random junior high school kid. I don’t need ‘Eric’ today. We’ve got an interdimensional transporter in the parking lot, and it’s broken down, and on top of everything else it was built by raccoons. I need Professor Awesome!

The teenager blinked in surprise, then nodded. “Yeah. You do. Let me get my lab coat.”
