Wow, this was long. Not objectively, it’s about 5500 words (making it still a short story when measured by Hugo Award category), but most Jenny Everywhere stories are very short.
I’m very glad I posted the first part for Jenny Everywhere Day; without an audience I’m sure I’d have lost interest before finishing.
Part One
How many toasters does Jenny have, anyway? That may be an awkward question. A few, certainly.
I might have more to say about Professor Awesome later.
The floppy door number is a not very subtle allusion to the Infinity Apartment story by Benj Christensen, though this one may be as normal as any place inhabited by a Jenny Everywhere.
My viewpoint Jenny doesn’t specifically name the deer chaser, a shishi-odoshi, but does recognize it as a thing that goes doink.
Part Two
Back in the day I made far too many notes on a biplane model derived from the Curtiss Jenny for Jenny Everywheres to use, all of which are long lost now. It still seems like a good fit.
Part Three
I really liked the magical pathway business here; it should work very well in a visual medium. And of course when she’s not traveling she picks it up and wears it as a scarf. What’s the deal with that, anyway? How did she get such a thing? We never find out. But it’s a very Jenny Everywhere thing to take hold of the Bifrost Bridge and wear it as a scarf!
We see Janni questing for the wisdom of tigers, a wheel of numbers, and an owl made of lightning. Why? What happens when she gets them all? There must be a story there.
Janni was a lot of fun to write but I’m not sure I could keep it up for very long.
Part Four A & B
These are small stories so I don’t regret packaging them into one release.
Genevieve, Princess of Everywhere, is clearly in the middle of something - as Jenny observed. I hope it works out well for her.
“Genie Everywhere” grew out of the play on words. She might have been in her bottle for a while and I don’t know yet what she’s going to do now that she’s out.
Part 5
Long time Jenny Everywhere fans will recognize this town; I literally couldn’t call back any farther, as this pier was seen in the very first panel of the very earliest released Jenny Everywhere story! I’ve always liked this setting and these characters so it was nice to be able to imagine another brief visit.
I wasn’t the only author working on this idea at the time, either. Lupan Evezan used it in his tale The Disappearance of Jenny Everywhere which was also released for Jenny Everywhere Day 2021.
Readers immediately identified the butch chick and the tall man, so by elimination the identity of the guy who grabbed the fire extinguisher should be obvious. Anyone with interesting ideas about the intense bald guy is welcome to chime in with them.
Speaking of this exact pier, and vivacious women of a certain appearance, check out this video of dancing with seagulls... I’m not sure if I should be disappointed or relieved that she’s not wearing a scarf.
Part 6
This one took a while to write. Making the showdown scene work just didn’t come together quickly and I still don’t think it’s really what it should be - but it’s done and that’s the most important thing it could be.
Several Jennies show up here and the creative process led me to check the internet for things I’d not have normally looked for, such as turbine motorcycles and shih tzus wearing goggles.
Incidentally, there is no baseball stadium at 11th and Washington in our world. Aside from that the observable city is just as described in the story.
Part 7
No action here, just a quiet gathering where Jenny can be alone with herself for a while.
Oh, and since I know some readers will wonder but not look it up, Proverbs 15:3 reads: “The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.”
So that's it for now. This is not my last Jenny Everywhere story but we're at the end of this one. Let's let Jenny - in several incarnations - enjoy the party.

Date: 2021-10-12 08:52 am (UTC)The high tech motorcyclist in Paying it Forward was not intended to be the same as the vintage biker in Second Date - lots of Jennies ride motorcycles - but you’re welcome to think of them as the same Jenny if you like. The same goes for the ninja Jennies; they might be the same ninja, but how would we ever know?
It’s a fair question, though; it wasn’t until after the chapter was released that I looked back at my older stories and realized that of course Cha Ni had been seen years earlier in the restaurant. Her description must have been waiting in the back of my mind, because she was right there when I realized my viewpoint Jenny needed an oracle.
Part 7 got a very minor edit, as the arrangement of the two parks was unclear. No big deal, but it’s the author’s job to describe the fictional world.
There are a few allusions that seem to have gone unnoticed as of this writing. One is pretty obscure but another was quite obvious and I thought Jenny Everywhere fans would catch the continuity nod. Interesting.
